Vicki Jones Cole is a longtime, class-taught student of Christian Science, who spent many years teaching Sunday School classes in Virginia and California, as well as twice serving in the capacity of Sunday School superintendent. She researched and wrote the three volume First Lessons in Christian Science in response to a need by some parents for ready-made lessons for Sunday School home-schooling. Her fourth book, Christian Science Terminology, grew out of a personal research project seeking insight into the precise way Mary Baker Eddy defined the terms she used in her writings.

The first book of a trilogy on the "first lessons" taught to Christian Science Sunday School students which focuses on the foundational teachings of the Ten Commandments. There are over 100 daily lessons suitable for a wide range of ages presented in question-and-answer format.

The manuals are simple loose-leaf transcripts; the pages are easily removed from their covers. This non-permanent binding is necessary because the lessons have been prepared in the form of "clip-and-carry" lessons, which may be copied, cut out, and used on-the-go, if desired, for today's busy families. The  lessons can also be read directly from the book.

There are over 100 lessons in each book. Each line of the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and Lord's Prayer is studied in detail. Each section starts with a couple of lessons for the little kids. The rest of the lessons are in question-and-answer format appropriate for a wide range of ages.  Parents and teachers can select the lessons most appropriate for their pupils. Full-text citations from the King James Version of the Bible or the writings of Mary Baker Eddy are included in each lesson. 

Parents or teachers can read and discuss each lesson with their children, or an older child can read the lessons alone. Each lesson takes only a few minutes to read out loud, but will offer a prompt, or springboard, for further discussion. The lessons for the older children include ideas for putting that day's lesson into practice, or suggestions for further study.

Since the publication of the first volume on the Ten Commandments in 2001, this trilogy of books known as First Lessons in Christian Science, has been well-received by both parents and Sunday School teachers. The lessons appeal to all who are seeking a deeper understanding of the "first lessons" and  how to live them in daily life.

This is not a book of Christian Science "jargon," which would simply describe the meaning of each term in a few words. Instead, it is a list of definitions which have been extracted directly from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, showing how the terms were used by her in the unique vocabulary she created for explaining Christian Science. This book is not structured like a traditional dictionary, as the terms and their definitions will depend solely upon what Mrs. Eddy has provided in her own words, some of which are in the form of symbolism, imagery, and analogy.

Christian Science Terminology does not include all the words or terms in Mrs. Eddy's books. It is more of a "mini-Concordance," or a condensation, which provides easy access to available definitions of the most important nouns or phrases. A reader will be able to browse the essence of all the definitions at once, and compare related terms. A number of these extracts are not picked up by a regular Concordance search of its listings due to their placement on the page in relation to the term they define. Many were discovered in a paragraph-by-paragraph search, in which subjects and pronouns were connected to nearby definitions.

Also new to this edition are terms found in the Glossary of Science and Health. Each definition is presented in a unique list format, offering individual focus to each line.
